Panel on "The Downside of AP" this Thursday
5/9/2023 8:27 am
Brookline High School buys 18 AP courses from the College Board, with 500 students paying to take nearly 1,000 exams each year—contributing to the private company’s $1.1 billion dollar revenue. Critics argue that these test-driven classes favor shallow memorization, and contribute to the high levels of stress that our children experience in the competitive higher education race. And racial disparities continue to plague participation rates and scores—echoing the eugenics-era biases of the College Board’s creators. Come hear Brookline educators and parents reflect on the academic, mental health, and equity aspects of the curriculum, and envision other ways Brookline High School could set our children up for college success. Free, via zoom. Register here.

Theater Arts Program at Brookline SmartSummers
4/30/2023 5:00 pm
This performance program, in its 19th year, offers young entertainers a chance to explore the world of theater. Each session, we’ll team up with professional artists in engaging acting, music, dance, and art classes to create original musicals based on popular children's stories. Students will learn dialogue and choreography and help create scripts, sets, and musical numbers. Throughout the days we will also include humorous interludes of reader's theater, improv, crazy choreography, outlandish script writing, and hidden talent hour. Our classes will take place both indoors and outside, and we'll be sure to include downtime recess games and relaxation time. Each session will culminate with an original musical. This summer, our original productions will be based on ocean stories, including Moana (session 1), The Little Mermaid (session 2), and Finding Nemo (session 3), as well as other ocean stories. For children entering 1st - 8th Grades. Part day and full day programs available. Email theaterartscamp@aol.com for more information.
