Safely Dispose of Unused Medications This Fall

10/12/2025 2:53 pm

October 25 is Drug Takeback Day.  It calls attention to the importance of safely disposing of unused/unwanted medications, which one in five BHS teens have admitted to misusing for reasons ranging from self-medication and weight loss to study aids and recreational use.  Brookline Dept. of Public Health and Human Services (11 Pierce St.) & Brookline Police Department (350 Washington St.). are offering free Deterra pouches as a convenient way to deactivate medications at home, reducing the chance of accidental poisoning or misuse. For more info on Deterra and how to use it, visit: https://www.brooklinema.gov/3931/Deterra-Drug-Deactivation-Pouches

DPW Food Waste Drop-off Expansion: Input Needed

9/25/2025 10:27 pm

In September of 2024, Brookline’s Department of Public Works launched 4 food waste drop-off bins across Town. The rodent-proof bins provide Brookline residents the opportunity to compost complimentarily, around the clock. All food waste collected is then converted into nutrient-rich compost, which reduced air pollution and creates healthy soil.

The program currently boasts more than 1,350 participants, and has diverted around 110 tons of food waste in the past year. Due to its success and popularity, the DPW plans to install 2 additional drop-off locations this fall (and possibly a 3rd location in spring 2026 subject to grant funding). In order to ensure the bins are in convenient locations, the DPW has developed a short survey in which residents can vote for their preferred sites.

The survey can be found online at www.brooklinema.gov/FoodWasteDropOff and will be available until October 10th, 2025.
